Sept. 23, 2001

Rock Hill, S.C. – Freshman Jenny Lake led the Gamecocks to a 13th place finish at the Great American Cross Country Festival in Rock Hill, S.C. USC defeated SEC foe, Mississippi State, but fell to Arkansas and Georgia.

BYU’s Tara Northcutt won the women’s 5,000 meter race with a time of 16:56.

“Lake had another great race for us,” stated Cross Country Coach Stan Rosenthal. “Everyone ran really hard. We just need to learn to push a little more, in the middle, when we’re running in a large race.”

South Carolina managed to finish in the top half of the 350-person field.

Lake, who has led the team for the third-consecutive meet, finished in 39th. Senior Rachel Smith ran a time of 19:08, placing 76th.

Freshman Criston Dailey (19:43) crossed the finish line with a time of 19:43. Abby Sox and Nikki Campbell closed out the USC top five with a time of 19:45.

The Gamecocks return to action Sept. 29 at the State Collegiate in Clemson, S.C.
