Southern California claimed their seventh Junior Davis Cup Championship with a 6-1 win over Texas on Tuesday at the Sam Daniel Tennis Center. This win ties Southern for the most Junior Davis Cup Championships since the tournament started in 1976.
Southern California jumped on top early and never looked back as they swept all five singles matches to cruise to an early 5-0 lead over Texas. Southern Cal defeated Texas with four of the single matches only going two sets. After having a 3-0 lead Blake Muller clinched the victory with a 7-6, 6-4 victory at no. 5 singles. In doubles, the two teams split to make the final score 6-1.
The third place match went down to the wire between Southern and Missouri Valley. After the first five singles matches Missouri Valley took a 3-2 lead going into doubles. Southern would sweep the doubles to edge Missouri Valley 4-3 to claim third place of the 2004 Wachovia Junior Davis Cup. Pacific Northwest beat Florida 4-3 to finish fifth.
The 2004 Wachovia Junior Davis Cup Sportsmanship Award was awarded to Ashwin Kumar of Texas. The player was voted on by players, coaches, and officials that participated in the 2004 tournament.
