Augusta,Ga -The USC equestrian team finished second behind Berry College over the weekend at an Intercollegiate Horse Show Association competition in Augusta, Ga. Included in the competition was Lander University, Clemson University and North Georgia College. This was the Gamecock’s first Iintercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) competition of the spring. The Garnet and Black lost a close varsity competition to defending champion Georgia, by a score of 1,114.50 to 1,108.50
Freshman Sarah Lowe, was named Reserve High Point Rider for Sunday’s competition. As she finished first in Open Flat and Open Fences. Sophomore Chelsea Koornick, a Roswell, Ga, native, finished first in Open Fences on Saturday. Koornick also finished first on Sunday in Open Flat. On Saturday junior Tara Brothers placed third in Open Fences. Brothers also led USC in Open Fences on Sunday.
Berry College led the team standings for both days of the competition. While the Gamecocks held second place both days.
” We are thin in a few key positions in the IHSA format due to the fact that we are not recruiting lower level riders any more, said Head Coach Boo Duncan. As riders point up into higher levels, we lose depth at the lower levels. Berry had a competitive team this weekend.”
The Gamecocks return home on Saturday, February 21 to host the Auburn Tigers. The varsity competition will take place at Irish Oaks Equestrian Centre in Irmo. The competition is scheduled to begin at 10 am. This will be USC’s third home varsity competition of the month.
