COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina continued their great start to the 2004 season as they topped the Davidson Wildcats 7-0 Sunday afternoon. The Gamecocks began the match just an hour after celebrating Head Coach Kent DeMars’ 300th win at USC. South Carolina (6-0) remains undefeated in the early 2004 season as they remain perfect against Region II opponents.

“Two wins out of two matches – it was a good day,” said DeMars. “I like what our doubles teams are doing. So far, we haven’t lost a doubles point yet. It’ll get tougher as we face tougher teams and that doubles point is vital.”

The doubles teams of Geraldo Knorr/Pedro Rodrigues and Tom Eklund/Marcus Westman both quickly posted 8-3 victories to win the doubles point for Carolina. The Swedish team of Eklund and Westman topped the duo of Jonathan Britt and Rob Gould while the Brazilian pair of Knorr and Rodrigues won over the Wildcat team of Russ Burns and Bryan Stonestreet.

In singles action, Tom Eklund continued to lead the charge, winning over Donald Miles at No. 1 singles, 7-6 (3), 6-2. Marcus Westman posted a win at No. 2 doubles with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Stonestreet.

Geraldo Knorr showed his flexibility Sunday, playing at No. 3 doubles for the first time this season and easily winning over Britt, 6-0, 6-1. Ben Atkinson notched the 6-4, 6-0 win over Burns at No. 4 singles.

Carolina’s win over Charlotte and Davidson Sunday closed out the indoor season for 2004, weather permitting. Next week, the Gamecocks go outside to face Richmond (11 a.m.) and Wofford (3 p.m.) at the Sam Daniel Tennis Center.

“We now have to work hard this week to make that transition from indoors to outdoors and we don’t have a lot of time,” said DeMars.
