Post-Game Coaches’ Quotes

South Carolina vs. Alabama

Feb. 4, 2004

Dave Odom, South Carolina: “I thought the key play was Kerbrell Brown’s three at the end of regulation. I was getting plenty of help from our bench to call a timeout there, but I thought the play had developed far enough to let it go. Michael Boynton did a nice job of driving to the basket and kicking it back out to a guy who was shooting the ball pretty well. We had a very good defensive stop at the end of regulation. Maybe the only one of the night. We didn’t guard very well tonight. This was a gutsy win over a team that really wanted to win. I thought we started out tentative in the first half and Renaldo Balkman looked to be the only one who was mentally doing what needed to be done on the court. This was a great win for us. A tough loss for Alabama. I’m glad to get this one behind us. Maybe, slowly but surely, we are starting to put together something special here. Maybe we can look back on this at some point and be able to say that. We aren’t there yet. Every game, we are just trying to inch our way to another win. That’s all you try to do this time of the year.”

Mark Gottfried, Alabama: “You have to give South Carolina credit. Statistically, they are not a great three-point shooting team throughout this year. They shot well tonight. [Kerbrell] Brown shot 4-for-5 from beyond the arch with one late in the game to tie it up. I’m proud of the way my boys hung in there and never gave up. We didn’t make all of the shots we needed to make.”

On three point shooting: “It was pretty phenomenal. The second half just went back and forth. They stepped up and made the shots. I’ve thought we’re a good three-point shooting team this year.”
