No. 3 Gamecocks T-2nd at SEC Championship

Three players inside the top-15 for South Carolina after 18 holes

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — No. 3 South Carolina got off to a solid start on Wednesday in the opening round of stroke play at the SEC Championship. The Gamecocks are T-2nd with No. 10 Florida at 1-over, one shot back of No. 20 Auburn.

“Solid first day for the Gamecocks,” said head coach Kalen Anderson. “The wind was very difficult to judge all day, making hole locations especially challenging to access. The entire team played steady, and I’m pleased with our start.”

Freshman Hannah Darling is T-5th after leading the team in round one with a 71 (-1). She made a team-high four birdies on the day. It marked her 10th round of par or better this season.

Graduate transfer Tai Anudit shot even par with a birdie and just one bogey on the day. She’s T-8th. Juniors Mathilde Claisse and Justine Fournand, the team’s French connection, each shot 73 and are T-11th at 1-over. Freshman Louise Rydqvist is T-42nd at 4-over. She shot even on the front and was hurt only by a tough stretch midway through her back nine.

Ten shots separate Carolina from the eighth and final spot for the match play portion of the tournament. The Gamecocks will be gunning for one of the top seeds over the course of the next two days.

Florida’s Marina Escobar Domingo is the 18-hole leads after an opening round 67 (-5).  Just seven players in the 71-player field fired a red number on Wednesday.

The Gamecocks will go off at the same time on Thursday, with Rydqvist leading things off on hole one at 10:40 a.m. (ET).
