COLUMBIA– Gamecock track and field is set to wrap up the collegiate season this week in Eugene, Oregon, at Hayward Field for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

The Carolina men have six entries, including five individuals. The Gamecock women have five entries, three of which are individual athletes and two of which are relays.

The meet will broadcast on the family of ESPN networks over the course of four days. ESPNU will host coverage at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, and at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday. Friday’s action will air at 9 p.m. on ESPN2. Saturday’s broadcast is set for 5:30 p.m. on ESPN.

Meet Schedule
The four day slate is composed of two men’s days (Wednesday and Friday) and two women’s days (Thursday and Saturday).

Wednesday’s Gamecock action begins at 7:32 p.m. with the semifinals of the men’s 4X100-meter relay. Thursday starts at 8:32 p.m. for Carolina with the semifinals of the women’s 4X100-meter relay. Friday’s action begins at 8:30 p.m. with Jackson Marseille in the men’s high jump. Rachel Glenn kicks off Saturday’s schedule with the women’s high jump at 5 p.m.
 
Last Time Out
The Gamecocks hit the track in Bloomington, Indiana, for the NCAA East Regional and punched tickets to the NCAA Championships in 11 different events.

Carolina had three of its four relay teams advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The men’s 4X100-meter relay, women’s 4X100-meter relay and women’s 4X400-meter relay teams all advanced to Nationals.

The women’s squad added three individuals to the NCAA Championship entries. Rachel Glenn is set to defend her women’s high jump title, Makenzie Dunmore returns to Oregon in the 400 meters and Destinee Rocker qualified for her second NCAA Championship meet of the year.

The men’s team had five individuals qualify to Eugene. Evan Miller made his way to Oregon in the 200 meters, Will Spencer Jr. qualified in the 400-meter hurdles, Anass Essayi is set to compete in the 1,500 meters, Jackson Marseille advanced in the high jump and Dylan Targgart is in the shot put field.

On what he’s looking forward to at the NCAA Championships
“The student experience. This is the first time they get to wear the white jerseys. We go through the process and it’s the crowning of the jewel. Everyone there is going to have a chance to be a Second Team All-American. When you have a chance to get in the top 16, you have a chance to get in the top eight and be an individual All-American and get on the podium. You’d like to be the first, second or third person, but you also want to shoot for being a First Team All-American. Then when you do that, you start scoring team points. We think that we have the possibility for team scoring on the men’s and women’s side. Our job is to come here and try to be an All-American and try to score for your team. We want to shoot for top-20 team finishes on both sides. We’re taking a large group and that brings a lot of possibilities.”
 
On the pressure on defending champion Rachel Glenn
“I don’t think that brings any pressure. She isn’t the defending champion indoors. She can see the list of people and know who’s having a hot day. From the regional meet and all of the numbers and this surface is adding up. Rachel’s approach was great and so was her timing. Coach Dee (Delethea Quarles) is doing a great job. Rachel likes the type of surface at Oregon. It’s similar to the regional meet, but it’s a little more refined. She’s excited about that. Last year off that surface, she jumped high and so did the guy from LSU who won. Mondo (South Carolina’s home track surface) is a sprinter’s surface. This is not. You have to hold the curve so you don’t slide. This is her surface. It is better for the less powerful jumpers. She is long and lean and not as explosive off the ground. She is excited and Coach Dee is excited about it. This is where she set her personal best last year.”
 
Defending Her Crown
Rachel Glenn comes into the NCAA Outdoor Championships as the defending champion in the women’s high jump.

Glenn won last year’s contest with a personal best clearance of 1.93m/6-4. The title marked the Gamecock’s 26th individual national championship.

So far in 2022, Glenn has claimed two runner-up finishes at SEC meets and took third at the NCAA Indoor Championships in March.

The sophomore’s season-best height this season has been 1.90m/6-2.75, which she cleared twice this season. She made that bar at the Gamecock Invitational and also at Weems Baskin.

Glenn will defend her crown on the same track she won her title last year.
 
Unbeaten Anass
Anass Essayi has made a splash since his arrival in January.

Essayi won the SEC title in the Mile at the indoor conference meet in February. Essayi didn’t get a chance to run a fast enough Mile time during the idnoor season, so he did not get a chance to compete for the national title.

The success has continued outdoors for the Moroccan Olympian. So far this season, Essayi has not lost a race, winning all five of the races he has run.

Essayi punched his ticket to Nationals with ease at the NCAA East Regional. He stayed at the front for the entire race in the First Round and the Quarterfinals.

Essayi looks to maintain his unbeaten record in Oregon.
 
Relays, Relays, Relays
South Carolina brings three relay teams to Oregon for the NCAA Outdoor Championships this week.

The Gamecock men’s 4X100-meter relay team and the women’s 4X100- and 4X400-meter relay teams are all in the semifinal field.

 Carolina is one of just 15 schools to bring both women’s relay teams to Eugene. The Gamecocks are also one of 15 schoolas to bring three or more relays to the NCAA Championships.

There is plenty of Garnet and Black to be seen in relay races this week.
