Rodrigues Receives Fourth Conference Honor of the Season
Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina men’s tennis junior Daniel Rodrigues has been named SEC Co-Player of the Week, marking his third consecutive weekly honor from the conference and fourth honor of the season. Rodrigues recorded two ranked singles wins and a ranked doubles win on the weekend.
The Funchal, Portugal, native is on a nine-match singles winning streak with all nine wins coming over ranked opponents. Against, No. 41 Vanderbilt, Rodrigues took down No. 44 Geroge Harwell from the No. 1 position in straight sets. Against, No. 12 Kentucky, Rodrigues squared off against No. 94 Liam Draxl, winning the match 6-4, 6-1. Rodrigues is now 18-2 from the No. 1 position and boasts a 14-2 record against ranked opponents on the season. He is ranked as the No. 3 player in the nation in the latest ITA rankings.
The junior’s ranked doubles win came with partner Connor Thomson against Vanderbilt. The Gamecocks took down No. 80 pair Siim Troost and Michael Ross in a dominant 6-2 decision. The Gamecock duo is ranked No. 28 in the ITA rankings and has a 14-3 record from the top spot in the lineup.
Rodrigues is the only player in the conference to have more than two weekly honors on the season and the only one to have more than two consecutive honors. His Co-Player of the Week, Hamish Stewart of Gerogia, recorded singles wins over No. 36 Nikola Slavic of Ole Miss and Vlad Lobak of LSU, along with a doubles win over Friere/Hunter of LSU.
Rodrigues and the Gamecocks will be in action on the road as they continue conference play. They will travel to face Auburn on Fri., April 8, at 4 p.m. ET and head down the road to take on Alabama on Sun., April 10, at 2 p.m. ET.
