Gamecocks to Face Stanford in First Round of ITA Indoor Nationals
Seattle, Wash. – No. 13 South Carolina men’s tennis will face No. 8 Stanford in the first round of the ITA Indoor National Championships on Friday. The match will take place at the Seattle Tennis Club at 12 p.m. ET/9 a.m. PT. Live stats and streaming will be provided by the ITA.
The Gamecocks qualified for this event after defeating LSU 4-1 and Duke 4-3 during the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Columbia, S.C. This win made the Gamecocks 5-1 in Kickoff Weekend action over the past three seasons and marks the first time in program history that South Carolina hosted the Kickoff Weekend.
South Carolina was last in the Indoor Championships in 2020, which was their first time attending since 2006. The 2020 team also earned their first win at the event since 1992.
Gamecock Notables
- The Gamecocks are 9-1 on the season. They started the season off with nine straight wins at home, including a win over No. 6 Wake Forest. The Gamecocks suffered their only loss to No. 23 North Carolina.
- Doubles pair Connor Thomson and Daniel Rodrigues are 8-1 from the No. 1 position. They are ranked aseventh in the nation and have taken down three ranked doubles pairs – Nos. 9, 37, and 45.
- No. 14 Rodrigues is a perfect 8-0 on the season with half of his wins coming over ranked opponents. He has taken down Nos. 9, 76, 99, and 109.
- Thomson is ranked 97th in the nation and has a 9-1 record on the season. He holds ranked wins over No. 38 and 51.
- Sophomore Toby Samuel is 7-1 on the season with one ranked win over No. 71.
Scouting the Opponents
- Stanford is ranked No. 8 in the nation. They have five ranked singles players (Nos. 1, 38, 49, 74, and 108) and two ranked doubles pairs (Nos. 6 and 53).
- The Cardinal men are 7-0 on the season with wins over Nos. 8, 20, 22, and 23.
- They defeated Tulane 4-0 and No. 20 UCF 4-0 in Orlando during the ITA Kickoff Weekend to qualify for the National Indoor Championship.
- Stanford is lead by sophomore Arthur Frey who is the nation’s No. 1 singles player. He has a 5-0 dual match record from the No. 1 position and was runner-up at the ITA Fall National Championship.
