KANSAS CITY, Mo. – For the third consecutive season, the South Carolina women’s soccer program had multiple players selected to the United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-South Region team, while defender Jyllissa Harris was named a Scholar All-American, as announced on Thursday afternoon (Dec. 16). Harris was named to the All-Region First Team and the All-America Second Team, while forward Ryan Gareis and goalkeeper Heather Hinz were named to the All-Region Second Team.
Harris earns the 11th Scholar All-America honor in program history and the first since 2019 (Grace Fisk and Mikayla Krzeczowski). It’s the fourth time in program history three or more players earned Scholar All-Region Honors.
A senior, Harris is majoring in early childhood education where she holds a 3.97 GPA. It’s the second All-Region honor for Harris, who was named to the second team last season. Earlier this year she was named to the All-SEC First Team for the second time in her career. She was also named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week. She finished the season third on the team with four goals, three assists, and 11 points. She started every match on the backline for the Gamecocks, playing every minute in 19 of 22 matches.
A graduate student, Gareis earned her bachelor’s degree in advertising with a 3.97 GPA and is currently pursuing her master’s in health communication where she has a 3.67 GPA. Gareis finished the season second on the team with nine assists, which ranked 43rd in the country. She was third on the team with four goals and her 17 points were second best on the squad. For her performance against Auburn, Gareis was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week.
Hinz, a junior majoring in sport and entertainment management, carries a 3.69 GPA. She started all 22 matches in goal for the Gamecocks. She played 1,981 minutes between the posts, which ranked 18th in the country. Her 1.045 goals against average was third in the SEC and 103th nationally. Hinz recorded seven shutouts on the season and finished with a .744 save percentage. She was the only goalie in the NCAA Tournament to record three shutouts in the first three rounds.
The Gamecocks ended their season 14-7-1 record, reaching the Elite Eight for the fifth time in the last eight seasons.
