Barry's Goal Not Enough For Gamecocks in SEC Quarterfinals
ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – The fourth seeded South Carolina women’s soccer team fell in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament to No. 5 seed Auburn 2-1, Tuesday night (Nov. 2). The Gamecocks now sit at 11-6-1 on the season.
“We put ourselves in a great position, but we just didn’t quite capitalize on the chances we had,” head coach Shelley Smith said.
Auburn took the lead going into halftime, scoring in the 41st minute on a loose ball inside the 8-yard box. Despite trailing 1-0 at the break, the Gamecocks were in control throughout most of the first half, out-shooting the Tigers 10-2.
The Tigers added to their lead in the 64th minute, scoring on another loose ball inside the box.
The Gamecocks were able to strike back in the 71st minute. Catherine Barry was fouled inside the box, earning a penalty kick. Barry lined up for the first penalty kick of her career, and promptly buried it home for her team-leading seventh goal of the season.
South Carolina’s best chance for an equalizer came in the 87th minute when Riane Coman put a ball on target, but the Auburn keeper was able to make the save.
For the match, the Gamecocks out-shot the Tigers 15-6, including a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal.
The Gamecocks now await to see their destination in the NCAA Tournament when the field is announced during the selection show Monday, November 8 at 4:30 p.m. on NCAA.com.
