Carolina Downs Georgia Southern on Tuesday Night

Logan Frost, Andrew Halloran and Brian Banahan scored for the Gamecocks

COLUMBIA—The South Carolina men’s soccer team defeated Georgia Southern, 3-1, on Tuesday night inside of Stone Stadium to close out the nonconference slate.

“I think I was really pleased with the fact we came off of two days’ rest and put in a solid 90 minutes,” said head coach Tony Annan. “We had guys come off the bench and finish the game. We refer to them as finishers, not subs. I am so pleased with the guys that came off the bench and finished the game in good fashion.”

Andrew Halloran scored the game-winner for Carolina (5-6-1) in the 48th minute of play. Halloran took a pass from Jared Gulden up the left side of the box and sent the ball to the far post for his first goal of the season. Halloran’s game-winner gave the Gamecocks a 2-1 advantage early in the second half.

Brian Banahan put the game away for the Gamecocks, scoring their third goal in the 86th minute. Lorenzo Nagy took the ball away from the Eagles and passed it to Banahan who had only the keeper to beat. Banahan made a move to his right and sent the ball into an empty net for a 3-1 Carolina lead.

The first half played out similarly for the Gamecocks but didn’t convert on all their chances. Annan said he thought the Gamecocks could have been up three or four goals had his team converted on some of its first-half chances.

Carolina did convert in the 14th minute when Logan Frost took a nearly perfect pass from Kyle Gurrieri near the right side of the penalty box and went to the far post for his third goal in two matches. Frost now has 11 points on the season, which leads the team.

Georgia Southern (4-8-0) equalized in the 37th minute to make it a 1-1 match headed into the half. Adam Davie scored with an assist from Samuel Odame.

The Gamecocks are now on a four-match unbeaten streak and have won three of their last four matches. It’s the first time since 2016 that Carolina hasn’t lost a during a four-match span.

Carolina returns to action at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday inside of Stone Stadium to take on No. 18 Florida International.
