No. 19 Carolina Drops First SEC Match of the Season
OXFORD, Miss. – The 19th ranked South Carolina women’s soccer team dropped its first SEC match of the season Thursday night (Oct. 7), as the Gamecocks fell at Ole Miss 2-1. South Carolina is now 9-3 on the season and 4-1 in SEC play.
During the match graduate student Lauren Chang became the Gamecock’s all-time leader in games played, as she took the field for her 96th career match. Entered the match Chang had tied the mark shared by Kayla Grimsley (2008-11) and Brittiny Rhoades (2007-10). Chang sits fifth among all active players in Division I for career games played.
The Rebels took the early lead scoring in the second minute from a shot just inside the box. The Gamecock offense was unable to get going in the first half as they were limited to one shot on goal in the first 45.
South Carolina netted the equalizer in the 59th minute when Catherine Barry ripped a shot from outside the 18-yard box into the upper 90. Her shot found its way between two Ole Miss defenders as the Rebel keeper didn’t even make an attempt. The goal was her fourth of the season, tying her for the team lead. Camryn Dixon was credited with the assist on the goal.
The celebration was short lived for the Gamecocks as Ole Miss retook the lead in the 62nd minute, scoring on a loose ball deflection. The Gamecocks were unable to answer this time, as they were held to one shot on target over the final 28 minutes.
For the evening, Ole Miss held a 13-8 shot advantage and 5-4 shot on goal advantage.
South Carolina returns home to host 12th ranked Tennessee Sunday, October 10, at 2 p.m.
