Gamecocks Play to Scoreless Draw Amidst Rainy Conditions

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Playing in heavy rain from the remnants of Hurricane Ian, the South Carolina men’s soccer team and West Virginia played to a scoreless draw Saturday afternoon (Oct. 1). The Gamecocks now stand at 5-3-2 on the year and 1-0-1 in the Sun Belt.

Carolina earned its third clean sheet of the season as Ben Alexander earned two saves and Tristan Himes earned another.

As the rain began to fall just before kickoff, the two sides were limited in the attacking quarter. The Gamecocks finished the first half with three shots, while the Mountaineers had two. The lone shot on goal of the half came when Laurits Lillemose launched one from about 30 yards out with under 10 seconds to play.

It took WVU over 10 minutes to put a shot on goal in the second half. Alexander made a diving save in the 78th minute to keep the clean sheet alive, recovering after hitting the ground attempting to make the initial stop.

The Gamecocks were limited to two shots in the second half, but looked to have one final chance in the final 15 seconds on a breakaway before the Mountaineers were able to knock the ball away.

West Virginia finished with an 11-5 shot advantage.

South Carolina returns home to Stone Stadium Saturday, October 8, when it hosts No. 3 Marshall at 7 p.m.
