Women's Soccer Shutouts Kentucky 1-0
COLUMBIA, SC – South Carolina women’s soccer added their second shutout of the week, taking down Kentucky 1-0 on Sunday. The win marked the fourth in conference play and the ninth overall for the season.
BREAKING DOWN THE ACTION
The Gamecocks’ offense started off hot, putting up six shots in the first 15 minutes of play. South Carolina’s defense also put in work, holding the Wildcats to just one shot with less than seven minutes remaining in the first half.
After a save by senior goalkeeper Heather Hinz, both teams headed into the locker room tied at 0-0 with South Carolina tallying a 9-1 shot advantage.
Five minutes into the second period, Corinna Zullo got the first chance up for the Gamecocks, coming off just wide to the right. Junior Catherine Barry then put down three more shots and connected on a fourth off a pass from Payton Patrick in the 55th minute of play to put South Carolina on the board 1-0.
Barry’s goal marked the fifth of the season and 19th of her career, tying for the No. 8 spot overall in the record books tying with Angela Austin (1996-99) and Debbie Smith (1995-96). Barry currently leads the team in overall goals (5), points (12), and shots (60). The junior also leads the conference in shots per game.
Jyllissa Harris also put her name into the record books, taking over the No. 1 spot for career starts at 95. Harris also moved to No. 3 overall for games played (97), placing her at No. 5 in the nation.
The Gamecocks finished the day with a 16-4 shot advantage, and took 10 corners.
