Recipients of 2022-23 Endowed Scholarships Announced
COLUMBIA, S.C. – University of South Carolina Athletics announced today the recipients of 22 endowed scholarships across seven sports, cheer and the Gamecock Club. Recipients for endowed scholarships are selected each year by the team’s head coach or department head.
The 2022-23 recipients of endowed scholarships are:

From the baseball team, Cade Austin earned Freshman All-America honors in 2022 after going 5-2 with a 3.17 ERA and two saves in 27 appearances on the mound. He threw 31.2 innings in SEC play, going 3-1 with a 2.84 ERA in conference contests. Braylen Wimmer hit .312 with a team-best 13 doubles, seven home runs and 35 RBI in 55 games played for the Gamecocks in 2022. He led Carolina with 13 stolen bases and had seven home runs in SEC games. A native of Summerville, S.C., Cole Messina played in 17 games with five starts during his freshman campaign. He had four hits, two runs scored and an RBI with four walks on the year. Will Sanders went 7-3 with a 3.43 ERA and 91 strikeouts in 89.1 innings pitched his sophomore season with the Gamecocks. Sanders finished fifth in the SEC in innings pitched and 10th in both ERA and strikeouts. Noah Hall had 78 strikeouts in 76.2 innings pitched in his first season at Carolina. A two-time SEC Pitcher of the Week, he had a 3.18 ERA in SEC games while holding opponents to a .253 batting average. Jack Mahoney was a second-team All-American in 2021 and eased his way back on the field in 2022 following an injury the previous year.
Hayden Brown joined the Gamecocks this season after spending five seasons at The Citadel where he averaged 12.6 points and 6.7 rebounds. Seth Needle is in his fourth season as a men’s basketball manager. The senior from Lower Merion, Penn., is a sports management major with a minor in business administration.
Women’s basketball senior Brea Beal is the consummate teammate who earned a start in 100 of her 101 games played because of her ability to do whatever the team needs and to lock down defensively for every minute she’s on the court. Aliyah Boston is a household name in college women’s basketball after sweeping the National Player of the Year awards in 2021-22 and going on to claim several national awards that span multiple sports in the Honda Cup and the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team Member of the Year. She led the nation with a program-record 30 double-doubles last season, including an SEC-record 27 straight, and is on pace to eclipse South Carolina’s career record of 72 set back in 1982.
Football’s five endowed scholarships include three position-specific awards. Luke Doty is a third-year quarterback who has seen action in 15 games during his career including six starts. He has completed over 60 percent of his passes with nine touchdowns. Traevon Kenion is an athletic and versatile tight end who can contribute in both the running game and the passing game. He took a big leap forward in 2021, appearing in all 13 games on offense and on special teams. Zacch Pickens returned for his senior season in 2022. An All-SEC candidate and team leader, Pickens was the 2022 Rex Enright co-Player of the Spring for the defense. The defensive tackle has been a regular on the honor roll and is scheduled to graduate in December. Dakereon Joyner is a versatile athlete who primarily has been used as a wide receiver, but has also played quarterback and has returned kicks during his career. The highlight of the redshirt senior’s career came when he earned MVP honors after leading the Gamecocks to the 2021 Duke’s Mayo Bowl win over North Carolina as the starting quarterback. Payton Mangrum is a former walk-on who was placed on scholarship just prior to the start of the 2022 campaign. The third-year player has been a standout on special teams.
Women’s golf sophomore Louise Rydqvist had a stand-out first season on campus, picking up honorable mention All-America status and a spot on the All-SEC Second Team. She was in the lineup for all five of the team’s program-record five wins in 2021-22.
A four-year mainstay on the men’s soccer team, Parker League’s work in the midfield and the classroom earned him CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition in 2021. Logan Frost was also a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection last year, adding All-Conference USA Third-Team honors as well. So far in 2022, he is second on the team in goals and assists.
On the track, junior Evan Miller captured two victories in the 2022 indoor season and one podium finish in the outdoor season. He qualified for NCAA Championships in both indoor and outdoor last season.
Kayla Manning is a sophomore cheerleader with a 4.0 GPA who is described by her coach as a natural leader and great teammate, representing the university well both in and out of uniform.
Premium seating and events graduate assistant Julia Rice moved into that role after serving as a Gamecock Club intern in Spring of 2021 and has been a member of the premium seating and events team since Fall of 2021. The Georgia, native earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of South Carolina in Spring of 2021 and is on track to graduate from South Carolina with her master’s in sport and entertainment management later this year, continuing her role as Assistant Director of Premium Seating & Hospitality in Spring of 2023.
