Barry's Late Goal Not Enough for 12th Ranked Gamecocks
CLEMSON, S.C. – The 12th ranked University of South Carolina fell for the first time this season, as the Gamecocks dropped a road contest Thursday night (Sept. 9), 2-1 at Clemson. The Gamecocks are now 5-1 on the season.
The Tigers scored twice in the first half, both coming off corner kicks. In the 10th minute, Gamecock goalkeeper Heather Hinz was able to deny the Tigers twice on loose balls in front of the net, but it was the third that found its way into the goal. Clemson added their second goal in the 23rd minute on a header from a corner kick.
After South Carolina was limit to one shot in the first 45 minutes, the Gamecocks put up six shots in the first 20 minutes of the second half. The South Carolina defense held Clemson to just two shots in the second half.
South Carolina broke through the Clemson defense in the 78th minute. Luciana Zullo worked a give-and-go with Ryan Gareis just outside the 18. Gareis put a pass across the box to the far side where Catherine Barry made a sliding kick and was able to get the ball past the Tiger keeper. The goal was Barry’s first this season and was Gareis’ fourth assist of the season.
The Gamecocks put two more shots on goal with under 10 minutes to play, but both were saved as South Carolina was unable to score the equalizer.
For the night, the Gamecocks out-shot Clemson 8-7 and held a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal.
South Carolina returns home to host Virginia Tech Sunday, September 12, with kickoff set for 5 p.m. The match will be broadcast on the SEC Network.
Great passing by @lucianazullo to @RyanGareis who found @catbarry25 on the far side as she puts it home with a sliding shot.
