Men’s Tennis Perfect on First Day of SEC – Big 12 Challenge
Tuscaloosa, Ala. – South Carolina men’s tennis was perfect on the first day of competition at the SEC – Big 12 Challenge in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The Gamecocks won one doubles match and three singles matches on the day over Texas Tech.
The day started with graduate Jake Beasley and freshman Lucas da Silva pairing up in doubles against Texas Tech’s Sebastian Abboud and Tyler Stewart. The Gamecock pair were efficient, taking out the Red Raiders 6-3.
Play moved to singles where da Silva took down Abboud 6-3, 6-2 for his fifth consecutive singles win. Beasley faced off against Stewart and earned a close comeback win in a lengthy battle. Stewart won the first set 6-3, but Beasley evened the match by winning the second set by the same margin. Both players were relentless in the third set, forcing the decision to come down to a tiebreak. The Gamecock was able to break away in the tiebreak to win 7-4 to take the match.
No. T-89 Connor Thomson played his singles match against Alabama’s Roan Jones, taking him down with a quick 6-2, 6-4 win.
Play will continue at the SEC – Big 12 Challenge tomorrow with one round of doubles followed by one round of singles. South Carolina will play against Oklahoma beginning at 11 a.m. ET.
