Columbia, S. C. – The University of South Carolina recorded its first tie of the season against No. 8 Rutgers, in front of 1,859 fans at the Gamecock Soccer Classic at Eugene E. Stone Stadium. The Gamecocks extend their record to 8-3-1.
South Carolina dominated the first half, outshooting the Scarlet Knights 7-2, but was unable to score. The match would remain scoreless going into halftime.
With just three minutes gone in the second half, Sherif El Bialy’s ricocheted shot off the goal post slid past goalkeeper Michael Bachmeyer, to give the Scarlet Knights a quick 1-0 lead.
In the 76th minute, USC tied the game after Jordan Quinn’s pass was knocked by Ricky Zinter. The tying goal was Runager’s first collegiate goal.
At the end of regulation the match was deadlocked at 1-1. Two fifteen minute halves were unable to break the tie and the match ended at 1-1. South Carolina outshot Rutgers 18-11.
In the earlier match, Maryland defeated College of Charleston 3-0 and was named tournament champions. Maryland was the only team undefeated in this weekend’s tournament after defeating USC 1-0 on Friday.
Maryland’s first goal was scored at 38:32 when Sumed Ibrahm drove in Siba Mohammed’s pass from 10-yards out. Just one minute and twenty-four second later, Mohammed struck again, scoring the Terrapins second goal of the first half. Maryland would ride a 2-0 lead into halftime. The Terrapins outshot College of Charleston 11-2 in the first half.
At 46:42, Ian Rodway, scored an unassisted goal to extend the Terrapins lead to three. Maryland, tallying 17 shots on goal, would hold the Cougars to a scoreless second half. Maryland’s goalkeeper, Noah Palmer, was credited with the shutout. Charleston’s goalkeeper, Wes Martino, recorded nine saves.
