Gamecocks AmeriCup Group Play Roundup

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – The four women representing the South Carolina women’s basketball have advanced beyond the group stage and now shift their focus to the medal rounds at the 2021 Women’s AmeriCup. 

The United States saw their group play finale against Argentina canceled after testing protocols caused the Argentina team to forfeit, securing a 3-0 record for the Americans and the top spot in Group B. Sophomore Aliyah Boston finished the group stage averaging 13.3 points per game and 7.7 rebounds per game, while junior Destanni Henderson averaged 4.3 assists per game, ranking fourth among all players in the group stage. 

Sophomore Laeticia Amihere helped the Canadian squad finish the group stage with a 4-0 record and the top spot in Group A with a 74-40 win over Columbia on Tuesday. Amihere had another steady game, scoring 10 points and pulling down six rebounds. She finished the group stage averaging 9.8 points per game. 

Freshman Kamilla Cardoso and Brazil finished their group play on Monday, wrapping up the stage with a 3-1 record and the No. 2 seed in Group A. Cardoso averaged 11.3 points per game and 8.3 rebounds per game in the group stage. 

The teams are off Wednesday ahead of the quarterfinals where Canada faces the Dominican Republic with the winner playing the winner of the Puerto Rico/Columbia matchup. The United States faces the US Virgin Islands squad while Brazil clashes with Venezuela, setting up a possible United States vs. Brazil semifinal matchup.
