South Carolina Battles in More Windy Conditions at Sea Island
Gamecocks in eighth on bunched leaderboard after 36 holes of SEC Championship
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. — South Carolina held firm in eighth on Thursday for the second round of the 2021 SEC Men’s Golf Championship. The Gamecocks shot 6-over (286) in tough conditions on another windy day at Sea Island Golf Club’s Seaside Course.
“We had another really good round where the team overall just fought hard and kept battling,” said head coach Bill McDonald. “The conditions early were difficult, with cool temps and strong, gusty winds. I thought we managed our emotions extremely well and we need to bring that same attitude and composure tomorrow for sure.”
Junior Ryan Hall and super senior Caleb Proveaux each shot 71 (+1) to lead Carolina. Super senior Jamie Wilson and sophomore Jack Wall also posted solid scores, each shooting 72 (+2). Wilson is T-15th at 2-over and Wall is T-21st at 3-over.
After a tough start the first five holes in some unusual early morning wind, the Gamecocks’ counting scores combined to shoot 2-under the final 13 holes. Wilson and Proveaux each shot 34 (-1) on the back nine coming in with a pair of birdies.
No. 37 Alabama, who played alongside the Gamecocks, moved into first for the top seed in match play on Saturday morning with the only under par team score (277, -3) of the day. Arkansas’ Segundo Pinto remains the individual leader at 6-under after shooting an even par 70 today. Pinto opened with a 64 on Wednesday.
The top eight teams after tomorrow’s final round of stroke play advance to the match play quarterfinals. South Carolina is seeking its third SEC Match Play appearance in four seasons under the new format (first was in 2017). It’s a bunched leaderboard with just 10 shots separating the current top eight through 36 holes.
