Goffi Adds Transfer James Story

COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina men’s tennis head coach Josh Goffi announced Tuesday that James Story will join the Gamecocks for 2021-22 after spending his first two seasons playing in the No. 1 singles position at Memphis. Story will have up to three seasons of eligibility remaining to play at South Carolina.

“I’m really excited to have a player like James become a part of our squad,” Goffi said. “He’s an experienced player with a great skill set who has very similar goals to those of our program. We’re looking forward to getting after those goals with him over the next few years.”

In a pair of abbreviated seasons at Memphis, Story rose from playing No. 3 in the singles lineup to the No. 1 spot, from which he went 8-8 this season to earn first-team all-conference honors from the American Athletic Conference. Two of his eight victories came against ranked opponents with the best coming in a straight-sets win over then-No. 54 Edson Ortiz of Alabama (Mar. 21). Story’s efforts helped the Tigers to the second round of the NCAA Championships and season record of 10-9.

Prior to joining the Tigers, the Cardiff, Wales, native won more than 10 combined world juniors singles and doubles championships to rank in the top 100 internationally. Story earned a qualifying spot in the Juniors Main Draw at the 2019 Australian Open and, in 2018, captured three doubles titles (Saint Cyprien, France; Sanxenxo, Spain; Budapest, Hungary). In 2017, he claimed both the singles and doubles titles at the TATS Open International Tennis Tournament in Tampere, Finland.
