Gamecocks Eighth After 18 Holes of SEC Championship

Jack Parrott and Jamie Wilson paced Carolina in R1 with even par 70s

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – It was a windy round one at Sea Island Golf Club on Wednesday for the SEC Men’s Golf Championship as South Carolina shot 285 (+5) and sits in eighth place. Just three teams shot under par as the Gamecocks sit just four shots back from the top-four on a packed leaderboard.

“Our guys fought hard today and we had pretty solid round considering the winds we faced for the last 10-12 holes,” said head coach Bill McDonald. “We’re in a good position to go post a low round tomorrow and make our way up the leaderboard.”

Super senior Jamie Wilson and senior Jack Parrott paced Carolina with even par 70s. The duo is T-15th with 11 other players. Parrott, a local product out of AC Florda, had a team-high five birdies in his SEC Championship debut. He bounced back from a 3-over stretch early in his round and made four birdies in his next six holes. Wilson had three numbers in the opening round. This week marks his third career appearance at the conference meet.

Sophomore Jack Wall (T28th, +1) and junior standout Ryan Hall (T48th, +4) were the final counting scores. Wall made the turn at even par then moved to 3-over midway through his back nine on a tough stretch of the golf course. He closed with two birdies in his final three holes to get in the clubhouse with a 71 (+1). Hall, who came into the tournament No. 2 in the nation with 98 birdies for players who have played 24 rounds in the 2020-21 season, did not record a red number for the first time all season. He’ll need a low one Thursday to get back into contention for medalist honors.  Senior Caleb Proveaux shot 78 (+8).

Arkansas’ Segundo Pinto has the individual lead by a shot as he opened with a 64 (-6) on Wednesday. No. 10 Georgia has the team lead by two shots after posting a score of 275 (-5) today.

The Gamecocks have favorable tee times for the second round on Thursday and will be first off hole one at 7:30 a.m. ET alongside No. 37 Alabama and No. 11 Texas A&M.
