Go and Claisse Get Started in Cavalier Match Play
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Senior Lois Kaye Go and sophomore Mathilde Claisse got started at the Cavalier Match Play tournament at the Birdwood Golf Course on Tuesday.
Go and Claisse are playing in the individual bracket comprised of eight women. In the quarterfinal matchup Go faced Vanessa Knecht from Wake Forest, besting her 2&1. Claisse took on Mimi Rhodes from Wake Forest, falling 1UP to Rhodes.
In her semifinal matchup in the winner’s bracket Go lined up against Phoebe Brinker from Duke while Claisse faced Claire Hodges from Virginia in the consolation bracket. Play was suspended at sunset with Go trailing Brinker 2UP through 14, and Claisse leading Hodges 2UP through 14.
“Real proud of how both girls played this morning,” assistant coach Kevin Williams said Tuesday evening. “When Mathilde lost her match she was three under and lost one down. LK battled hard, didn’t have her ‘A’ game but she was able to win her match 2&1. We got through 14 holes in the afternoon of their second match. Mathilde was 2 up and Lois Kaye was 2 down. It’s great for them to get some experience in match play prior to us going to the SEC championship next week. We’re looking forward to finishing strong tomorrow.”
Round two action resumes at 7:45 a.m., and the final individual match play rounds tee off between 10:05-10:29 a.m. Coverage will resume on our Instagram story tomorrow, with a recap to come after action concludes.
