Gamecocks Begin LSU Invitational on Friday
Ryan Hall, eighth-ranked player in the nation, leads Gamecocks into Baton Rouge
BATON ROUGE, La. – South Carolina will be making its tournament debut at the LSU Invitational (Feb. 26-28) this weekend. The Gamecocks will be playing in their second of five regular season tournaments this spring.
“It feels good to be back on the road and playing again,” said head coach Bill McDonald. “We struggled a couple weeks ago, but we’ve made some good adjustments and I think we’re in a good spot this week. This course is demanding around the greens, and it will be a stern test if we get the forecasted winds. We will need to be patient and committed to our game plans for sure. I’m excited about Nick Mayfield making his debut for us. He’s extremely talented and just keeps getting better.”
It’s a strong 15-team field featuring 12 SEC programs and six teams ranked in the top-25 of the latest Golfstat poll.
Junior Ryan Hall, who has finished in the top-20 in all four starts during the 2020-21 season, man’s the top spot in the lineup for Carolina. The Knoxville, Tenn., native is fresh off a season-best performance at the Gators Invitational (Feb. 12-13) in which he shot 200 (-10) en route to taking solo third.
Super senior All-American Jamie Wilson, sophomore Jack Wall and super senior Caleb Proveaux remain in the lineup for the Gamecocks. Wilson and Proveaux, like Hall, have started all four tournaments for Carolina this season. Sophomore Nick Mayfield, a Rock Hill, S.C., native will be making his collegiate debut in the lineup this week at The University Club of Baton Rogue. Mayfield played in two tournaments last season but competed as an individual.
The Gamecocks will be paired with Ole Miss and Kentucky for the opening round on Friday. Proveaux will lead things off at 10:10 a.m. ET on hole 10.
