Franks Leads Gamecocks with Another Top-Five at General Hackler

South Carolina Athletics

Sophomore shot 207 (-9) to finish T-4th in 84-man field

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – South Carolina shot a final round 295 (+7) on Tuesday at the General Hackler Championship to finish ninth in the 14-team field. The Gamecocks were led again this week by sophomore Nathan Franks, who finished T-4th for his second consecutive top-five finish.

“It wasn’t our best for sure this week,” said head coach Bill McDonald. “After playing patient and finishing strong just a week ago at Palmetto, we seemed to be out of sorts except for the second round. Nate (Franks) played some really good golf, and he certainly carried us. The rest of the guys have some work to do to get back on track.”

Franks shot 70 (-2) for another under par round, his sixth consecutive red number this spring. The Roebuck, S.C., native shot 207 (-9) this week at The Dunes Golf and Beach Club. He led the team with 12 birdies and T-2nd in the field with 39 pars.

Transfer Lansdon Robbins shot 74 (+2) with a pair of birdies. He tied for the field lead this week in par-3 scoring average (-2, 2.83). Freshman Zach Adams shot 75 (+3) with a birdie and an eagle on his scorecard. Fifth-year senior Evans Lewis was the final counting score with a 76 (+4). He rallied from a tough start on the front nine, turning in a 1-under 35 on the front thanks to a trio of birdies.

The Gamecocks couldn’t get the putts to fall this week, finishing second with 170 pars and T-13th with just 37 birdies.

ETSU won the team title by six shots with a 54-hole total of 840 (-24). The Bucs are led by former Gamecock associate head coach Jake Amos. ETSU’s Mats Ege and Virginia’s Ben James were co-medalist at 13-under.

Carolina will be back in action at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate (March 26-28) next Sunday. The Gamecocks will look to defend their title at the event, which was shared with Bucs as co-champs last season.
