Samuel Named SEC Co-Freshman of the Week

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina men’s tennis Toby Samuel was named the Southeastern Conference Co-Freshman of the Week, the league office announced today. It is his first career recognition, and he shares the honor with Tennessee’s Johannus Monday.

In a pair of dual matches last week, Samuel’s three victories across singles and doubles helped key a pair of road victories at Clemson and Georgia Tech. In doubles, he faced his first ranked opponent with teammate Jake Beasley in No. 41 Keshav Chopra and Andres Martin of Georgia Tech in the No. 2 spot in the lineup. The duo notably upset their opponents with a commanding 6-1 outcome.

Samuel’s pair of singles victories last week came at the No. 4 spot in the lineup and extended his singles win streak to three. He is tied with Daniel Rodrigues for a team-high 11 singles wins on the season.

The No. 21 Gamecocks have their home debut on Fri., Feb. 19, when they begin SEC play against Auburn.
