Samantha Chang Earns Spot on Canada's She Believes Cup Roster

COLUMBIA, S.C. – University of South Carolina women’s soccer redshirt sophomore Samantha Chang has been named to Canada’s She Believes Cup active roster that will be held in Orlando from Feb. 18-24.

Chang, who has been with the Gamecocks for three seasons now, completed her second season on the field for the Gamecocks in the fall of 2020. The roster spot is the first for Chang on the full Canadian National Team. In 33 career matches at Carolina Chang has scored four goals and has four assists as a midfielder. She was named to the 2019 All-SEC Freshman Team and was named the United Soccer Coaches National Player of the Week during the fall of 2020.

“We are all excited for Sam and this opportunity to represent her country at the highest level,” South Carolina head coach Shelley Smith said. “Sam has worked hard over the last couple of years as she has recovered from an ACL and continued to grow as a player. We are so glad to see her dedication and commitment lead to a dream come true seeing her name on that roster. We’re proud of what she has accomplished so far and look forward to seeing her continue to push herself to earn more opportunities in the future.”

Canada will kick off the tournament when they face USA on February 18 at 7:00 p.m., followed by Argentina on February 21 at 6:00 p.m., and closing out the tournament against Brazil on February 24 at 4:00 p.m. All three Canada matches will be broadcast live by One Soccer and the USA and Brazil matches as special presentations on CBC. Fans will also find extended coverage across Canada Soccer’s digital channels on Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and Twitter featuring the social media hashtag #CANWNT.

Chang joins South Carolina great Sabrina D’Angelo and as Gamecocks to be named to the Canadian National team. Chang had success with the Canadian youth programs before she arrived at South Carolina. She represented Canada at the U20 level and participated in the U17 FIFA World Cup in Jordan in 2016 and won medals at the 2016 Concacaf U-17 championship and the 2014 Concacaf U-15 Championship.
