Goffi Named Wilson/ITA Carolina Region Coach of the Year

Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina men’s tennis head coach Josh Goffi has been named the Coach of the Year for the Carolina Region, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced on Tuesday.

Goffi’s honor as the Wilson/ITA Coach of the Year marks the fourth time in his career earning the title and third consecutive title. He had previously earned the title in 2013 after his third year at the helm.

In his 13th season at South Carolina, Goffi led the Gamecocks to a 22-7 record that included five wins over opponents ranked inside the top-10. The team made a run in the NCAA Tournament, concluding their season in the quarterfinals, the furthest that a South Carolina team has advanced since 1989.

The Gamecocks had a historical season, spending the entirety of the 2023 dual season ranked inside the top-10 and achieving a new program-best ranking of No. 2 in the nation. The team concluded the season at No. 8 in the country, the highest final rankings since 1989.  Under Goffi’s leadership, South Carolina has finished in the top-25 every season since 2017, the longest such streak in program history.

In the fall, Goffi coached juniors Connor Thomson and Toby Samuel to the program’s first ITA All-American title, winning the doubles tournament in Tulsa. The duo the went on to become the program’s first No. 1 ranked pair, holding the top spot in the rankings for all but one week of the season and becoming the first in program history to end their season atop the rankings.

Goffi also coached sophomore Casey Hoole to become the ITA Carolina Region Singles Champion in the fall, the second regional champion under Goffi’s guidance.

During the 2023 season, Goffi coached three players to All-SEC honors – Thomson and Samuel on the first team and James Story on the second team. Goffi also helped both Samuel and Thomson to earn All-America status with both players earning the honorific title in singles and doubles.
