Carolina Headed to Tallahassee for First Cross Country Action
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina women’s cross country team opens the 2020 season on the road in Tallahassee, Fla., on Friday at 9:05 a.m. at the Apalachee Regional Park.
The event will serve as the Gamecocks first Cross Country event in the 2020 athletic year. The meet will hold four total races with both men and women competing in an Open and Invite style format. Schools are limited to 10 entries per gender with open and unattached competitors able to compete by registering. There will be no spectators allowed at the event.
“We are excited to get a competition in at the Florida State Invitational this Friday,” Cross Country Coach Andrew Allden said. “It is a well-known course and has been host to some NCAA Regionals and the ACC Championships. This will also be the NCAA site next year, so that will be a great chance for some of our team to get a look at a place that we will likely be at again next year and in the future.”
The Gamecocks will be racing nine other schools that include Florida State, UAB, LSU, Southern Mississippi, South Alabama, FIU, Mercer, Flagler College and Valdosta State. Team scores will be computed by totaling the top five runners’ finish positions. The sixth and seventh runners will count as displacers.
Hitting the course for the Gamecocks are returners Sierra Biber, Savannah Bowers, Hannah Cella, Lyndsey Fowler Kensi Gray, Rachel Hensler, Kira Jenkins, Isabella Pisani, Sarah Riser Cailin Saylor, Heather Stone, Hannah Twine and Brooke Wilson.
Making their debuts as Gamecocks are freshmen Kathleen Abrams, Hope Dominique and Jenna Pellazzari.
The meet will not be streamed but can be followed live on PtTiming.com. There are also safety protocols in place that include:
- Prohibit spectators and nonessential personnel at cross country races
- Require everyone to wear a face cover at a cross country race unless they are actively competing or have a chronic pre‐existing or demonstrable medical condition.
- Require everyone to be screened for COVID‐19 symptoms, including temperature checks, prior to admission to the designated cross‐country race area.
- Require all competitors, coaches, and their essential personnel to receive negative test results for COVID‐19 within 72 hours of the event.
