COLUMBIA, S.C. – The 2003 USC Fall Men’s Tennis Invitational began Friday as two doubles teams and five singles players advanced through the opening rounds. The annual tournament, taking place at the Sam Daniel Tennis and the Columbia Tennis Centers, witnessed another successful day for Gamecock tennis.
In A Doubles, the doubles team of Ben Atkinson and Carl Wermee notched an 8-2 victory over the Radford duo of Brandon Johnson and Dominic Soever, then advanced yet again with a close 9-8 (5) victory over Jonathan Janda and Brad Pomeroy from North Carolina. The team of Marcus Westman and Geraldo Knorr topped the Newberry team of Rob Hindall and Toby Rawlings 8-1 before falling to North Carolina’s Geoff Boyd and Andy Metzler 8-4.
In B Doubles, Kazuya Otani paired up with N.C. State’s Ryan Johnson and topped the Coastal Carolina pair of Adam Adler and Andy Caress before advancing to beat Jose Netto and Nikola Andielic from Barton College 8-3 and 8-5, respectively.
In singles action, Carl Wermee advanced in the A Singles after stopping Georgia Tech’s Zachary Rath 6-4, 7-6 (5). Geraldo Knorr also advanced with a win over Timo Kienle of Weber International 6-1, 6-2. Rob Cassidy advanced in the A/B Singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Joakim Arhammar from Radford.
B-1 Singles witnessed some more Gamecock domination as Otani cruised to a 6-2, 6-4 win over Jeff Muthig (Wofford) and Jason McAlhaney topped Oliver Elston of Newberry 6-1, 6-3. Saturday’s draws can be found at here.
