Charlotte, N.C. – Jack Cummings scored on a penalty kick 25 seconds into the match and freshman goalkeeper Brad Guzan recorded a shutout with four saves as the South Carolina men’s soccer team defeated Charlotte 1-0 on Wednesday evening at Transamerica Field. The win improves Carolina to 8-5 on the year while the loss drops Charlotte to 4-6-2.

“I’m very proud of our team,” said USC head coach Mark Berson. “We played with a great deal of determination and we were able to put together two good halves. It is nice to come away with a win on the road.”

Cummings goal was his fourth of the season and came in the first minute of play. The Gamecocks picked off a UNC Charlotte pass and put a through ball into Ayo Akinsete, who was brought down in the penalty box resulting in the penalty kick. Carolina came close to increasing its lead to 2-0 in the second half on a combination play with Josh Alcala, but the officials ruled offsides nullifying the goal. Guzan now owns six shutouts on the season in goal for the Gamecocks.

South Carolina continues on the road with a Sunday match at Furman scheduled for 2 p.m.
