Kosgei Earns SEC Women’s Runner of the Week

COLUMBIA, S.C. (Sept. 5, 2023) – South Carolina’s Judy Kosgei has been named this week’s SEC Cross Country Women’s Runner of the Week, announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.

Kosgei becomes the first Gamecock to claim the women’s runner of the week since Heather Stone did so almost five years ago to the day. Kosgei’s teammate, Gabriella Gait-Smith, earned SEC Freshman Runner of the Week last season.

The Kenya native needed just one meet to jump into the Gamecock record book, setting a new program record in the 5K with a time of 16:52.6 to win the 2023 Eye Opener. Kosgei bested the previous school record by 11 seconds as her finish was good enough to claim the podium, winning by a full 19 seconds overall.

Kosgei and the Gamecocks will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 15 when they host the Gamecock Challenge at Charwood Golf Club, the site of the 2023 SEC Cross Country Championship.
