Two Late Goals Downs Gamecocks

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina men’s soccer team (0-3-1) dropped its home contest Tuesday night (Sept. 5) to UNCW (2-1-1) 2-0.

The Gamecocks held an advantage in every offensive category on the night, leading 15-9 in shots, 7-5 in shots on goals, and 11-1 in corner kicks. Ethan Dekel Daks led Carolina with five shots and two shots on goal. Mika Habel and Jack Burgess each attempted two shots. In goal, Ben Alexander made three saves.

South Carolina dominated the first half, holding an 8-1 shot advantage. The Gamecocks put three shots on goal in an eight-minute stretch, but were unable to capitalize and find the back of the net.

It looked to be a similar story to start the second half, as the Gamecocks put up two shots on goal in the 52nd minute, both resulting in diving saves by the Seahawk goalkeeper.

UNCW broke through the in 72nd minute, scoring on a shot from outside the 18-yard box. They added to their lead in the 77th minute, scoring off a rebound after an initial save by Alexander.

Carolina had two more chances in the final 15 minutes, but shots by Dekel Daks and Burgess were turned away.

South Carolina continues its homestand September 8, when it takes on Queens University Charlotte at 7 p.m.
