Wall Wins the 118th Met Amateur at Bethpage Black

Rising sophomore won 4&2 in the 36-hole championship match on Sunday

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Rising sophomore Jack Wall won the 118th Met Amateur on Sunday at Bethpage Black. He defeated Luke Sample, 4&2, in the 36-hole championship match.

Wall trailed 2-up after the first 18 holes in the morning. He then won back-to-back holes with pars at holes three and four to tie things up early in the final 18 holes of the match. From there, Wall made birdies at eight and nine to take a 2-up lead heading into the back nine. He didn’t trail the rest of the match en route to victory.

The Brielle, N.J., native, qualified for the round of 16 in match play with a 1-over 72 on Wednesday earning the 15th seed. Click here for full results and the final bracket.

Widely regarded as one of the toughest courses in the country, Bethpage Black most recently played host to the 2019 PGA Championship. It’s also been the site for two U.S. Opens (2002 & 2009) and is a future site for the Ryder Cup (2025).

Wall started all five fall tournaments for the Gamecocks during the shortened 2019-20 season and played well, posting a score average of 71.93 with eight rounds of par or better and five scores in the 60s. He had a career-best showing at the J.T. Poston Invitational (Sept. 30-Oct. 1) with his first top-10 after finishing T-7th with a 54-hole total of 204 (-9). Wall fired three-straight under par rounds at the event, including a final round 65 (-6) for a career low 18-hole score. He helped the team set the new 54-hole tournament scoring record at 806 (-46).
