Knoxville, Tenn. – Sue Flamini’s goal at 85:03 broke a 2-2 tie as Tennessee defeated the South Carolina women’s soccer team 3-2 on Sunday afternoon in Knoxville. Carolina had bounced back from a 2-0 deficit with goals from freshmen forwards Jessi Swaim and M.A. Foster to tie the match before Flamini’s goal with under five minutes remaining. Tennessee is now 9-4 with a 3-1 record in the SEC while Carolina is 8-5-2 and 1-2-1 in the SEC.
“The second half we came out and played well,” said USC head coach Shelley Smith. “I thought we competed and did a great job to come back and tie the match. We didn’t do a good job to clear off a corner kick and Tennessee was able to settle and get a shot on net for a goal and won the match.”
The Lady Vols broke open with the first goal at 17:00 in the first half as Ali Christoph knocked a shot into the right side of the net. Tennessee would take a 2-0 lead at 62:18 as Keeley Dowling scored on a header off a corner kick.
Carolina stormed back 20 seconds later to cut the deficit to one as Swaim scored her first goal of the season. M.A. Foster flicked a long serve from Sarah Lentz to an open Swaim in front of the goal, who knocked a shot past Vanessa Phillips-Bosshart. Carolina tied the match at 83:17 as Foster scored her fourth goal of the year. Sarah Lentz again served a long ball that found Foster who knocked the goal in from the right doorstep.
Flamini’s goal less then two minutes later won the match for the Lady Vols. The Carolina defense failed to clear a corner kick and Flamini was able to drill a shot inside the “18” to the right corner for the game-winning goal.
South Carolina returns home for two more SEC matches next weekend. Carolina hosts Vanderbilt on Friday at 7 p.m. and closes the weekend out on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. vs. Kentucky.
