Barry Adds Equalizer in 86th Minute Over Tennessee
COLUMBIA, SC – The seventh-ranked South Carolina women’s soccer team (7-1-3) put on a nail-biter for fans Sunday night, making a last-minute comeback to tie things up 1-1 with Tennessee (6-2-2) after the Lady Vols got on the board first.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first half saw nearly equal opportunities from both sides with two corners each, and Tennessee just edged out the Gamecocks in shots, 8-7
- Sophomore Shae O’Rourke tallied three of her team’s shots in the first half with one on goal
- Fifth-year keeper Heather Hinz made a huge save in the 27th minute after an attempt by the Lady Vols’ Maria Nelson nearly snuck in directly under the crossbar, but Hinz was able to get a hand on it and knock it out

- South Carolina turned up the tempo in the second half, but Tennesse was able to get on the board in the 76th minute after Kate Runyon snuck one past Hinz in the back left of the net right inside the 18
- The Gamecocks didn’t back down, making four more attempts over the next 10 minutes, eventually leading to a corner
- Inside the box off the serve, Tennessee’s Jordan Fusco fouled senior Cat Barry leading to a penalty kick for South Carolina. Barry lined up the shot and ran it right past keeper Ally Zazzara to nab the equalizer in the 86th minute, her seventh of the season and 31st of her career
- The Gamecocks took two more shots and just as many corners in the remaining minutes, and managed to turn the tides on the Lady Vols, finishing with a 19-16 shot advantage (six on goal)
- Hinz tallied four saves, and registered another full 90 minutes in goal. Hinz now moves to No. 3 for all-time minutes in the Carolina record books currently standing at 5,883
