Kosgei Takes Down 6K Program Record at Paul Short Run
BETHLEHEM, Pa. (Sept. 30, 2023) – Another race, another win and record broken for freshman phenom Judy Kosgei.
The Kenya native led the way for the Gamecocks on Saturday at the Paul Run Short, running the 6K event in record time of 19:54.9, besting the previous school record of 20:38.8 held by Heather Stone in 2019. Kosgei topped the charts for her third victory in as many races, defeating Boston’s Hannah Prosser who finished runner-up with a time of 19:59.1.
Sophomore teammate, Gabby Gait-Smith, was the next best finisher for Carolina with a personal-best time of 21:17.0 to finish 44th. Gait-Smith’s time also marked the 12th-fastest 6K in Gamecock history. Hope Dominique (22:08.1), Anna Boyd (22:08.6) and Ella Zeigler (22:11.5) rounded out the five scorers for the Gamecocks, with Zeigler’s time setting a new personal record.
Utah Valley captured the team win in the Gold bracket with 77 points, followed by Wake Forest with 129 and Boston with 176.
Five Gamecocks competed in the Open Women’s 6K earlier in the morning with Molly Joseph leading the way with a 24th-place finish following a personal best time of 22:53.8.
South Carolina will be back in action in six days when the Gamecocks travel to Charlotte, N.C. to compete in the Royals Challenge hosted by Queens University on Oct. 6.
