Rookie Reagan Schubach Named SEC Freshman of the Week
BIRMINGHAM, AL – Newcomer Reagan Schubach has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week, as announced by the conference on Monday. It is the first conference award of her career.
The rookie grabbed her first career SEC game-winner in the 1-0 victory over LSU this past Thursday (Oct. 5), her third game-winner of the season. The Gamecocks and Tigers found themselves locked up 0-0 continuing into the second half, until Schubach got her shot past two Tiger defenders and keeper Mollee Swift to sink it into the upper left of the net in the 55th minute. The goal was her sixth of the season, which ties for the most as a freshman in the SEC, and places her at No. 2 on the team for total goals and points (13).
Schubach has had a standout rookie season for the Gamecocks highlighted by scoring her first two collegiate goals in the home opener against Jacksonville, which also happened to be her birthday. The freshman continued her streak, scoring twice more over the next three games and getting a start against Coastal Carolina (Sept. 3). On the road at Auburn (Sept. 29), Schubach found the equalizer for the Gamecocks after trailing 1-0 in the 80th minute for her first collegiate goal in SEC play.
Schubach and the rest of the Gamecocks will be back at home on Friday, Oct. 13 at 7:00 p.m. as they take on Ole Miss.
