Nov. 25 2001

The question isn’t ‘will they’ but rather ‘where will they’ as South Carolina listens to the NCAA Tournament bracket announcement Monday, Nov. 27 at 3 pm. The announcement will be watched in the Lettermen’s Lounge at Williams-Brice Stadium.

USC will be looking to make the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in seven years under Coach Christopher.

SOUTH WINS!!! The South Carolina Gamecocks defeated their neighbors to the north, the North Carolina Tar Heels last weekend, 3-1. The Gamecocks (20-5, 10-4 SEC) now await the NCAA Tournament.

CAN YOU SAY TOP 25 EVERY WEEK? USC has been ranked in the USA Today/AVCA top 25 all season. They are currently ranked No. 23 with a new poll to be released Monday at 3 pm.

SEVEN OUT OF NINE ISN’T BAD! With the win over the Tar Heels, the Gamecocks recorded their 20th win this season. They have had at least 20 wins in the past seven out of nine seasons under Head Coach Kim Christopher.

WHAT WE’VE DONE USC advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2000, losing 15-13 in the fifth game to eventual NCAA champion Nebraska. The Gamecocks defeated George Washington 3-0 to have the right to play Nebraska.

“Our goal this year is to make it to the Sweet 16 and beyond. We have the right mix of athletes to do that: we are experienced and work hard,” said USC Head Coach Kim Christopher.

NOT NOVICES The Gamecocks will receive their fifth NCAA Tournament bid in seven years on Monday. They have advanced to the second round four times.

PS – SHE’S BEEN THERE, DONE THAT USC Head Coach Kim Christopher led West Texas State to the 1990 NCAA title. The year before they were runner-ups.

SERVE IT UP Cally Plummer recorded six service aces against North Carolina. This is second in number of aces in a game for Cally this season. She recorded eight service aces against Clemson on October 10th.

THEY KILLED ‘EM! Carolina recorded 78 kills against North Carolina, setting a season high for team kills in a match. Their previous high was 72 against Arkansas on November 17th at the SEC Tournament.

SEC TOURNAMENT The Gamecocks entered the SEC Tournament in Knoxville determined not to let history repeat itself. The past two years the Gamecocks have been upset in the first round as a number three seed. This time around, they defeated number six seed host Tennessee 3-2 to move on to the second round. Unfortunately, they lost a hard fought match to Arkansas 3-1. Arkansas gave Tournament champion Florida all they could handle, losing 19-17 in the fifth game.

ONLY HER LEFT PAW KNOWS Cally Plummer is No. 5 on the career assists list – just four from No. 4. Plummer has put down 49 this year for a three year tally of 182. Can she reach Teri Montoya, the leader, at 214 (1981-84)? Only her left paw knows.

BY THE WAY Megan Hosp is also moving up the career assists chart with 3,410 in her three year career. Hosp is No. 4 on the chart and needs 192 to move to No. 3. Former four-time All-SEC setter Ashley Edlund holds the school record with 5,177 (1995-98).
