Athens, Ga. – Freshman Shelly Hoddeson scored her fourth goal of the season and Camille Toney and Sarah Lentz added a goal apiece as the South Carolina women’s soccer team defeated Georgia Southern 3-1 on Friday afternoon at the UGA/Nike Tournament in Athens, Ga. The win improves Carolina to 6-3-1 on the year while the loss drops Georgia Southern to 3-5.
“For the most part we controlled the game and possessed the ball well,” said USC head coach Shelley Smith. “We have to work on making better decisions on our offensive 1/3 and become a more dangerous team.”
Carolina wasted no time getting on the scoreboard with a goal from Camille Toney at the 1:12 mark. Toney dribbled in and knocked a shot from above the “18” that found the right corner of the goal for her first goal of the season. Georgia Southern tied the match at one midway into the first half at 25:27. A Georgia Southern cross was knocked into the Carolina net by USC defender Alison Jarrow for an own goal. Carolina took a 2-1 lead just a little over two minutes later however as Sarah Lentz scored her first career goal off a corner kick from Erica Bowie at the 27:50 mark.
USC put the game away at 76:20 in the second half as Hoddeson secured a cross from M.A. Foster and knocked a shot past Georgia Southern goalkeeper Tanya Woehr for a 3-1 Carolina lead. The assist for Foster was the her third of the year.
South Carolina finished the night with a 19-2 shot advantage as well as a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks. Elise Matthews made one save on the night in goal for the Gamecocks.
South Carolina closes out play in the UGA/Nike Tournament on Sunday at 1 p.m. vs. Liberty. Carolina returns home on Friday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. opening up the SEC season vs. Auburn.
