Carolina Drops Conference Home Opener To ODU
Own goal proves to be the difference
COLUMBIA, S.C. —- A first-half own goal proved to be the difference as South Carolina men’s soccer dropped a 2-1 match to Old Dominion in its Conference USA home opener Saturday night at Stone Stadium. All three goals, including an own goal against both teams, came in the first half as Carolina dropped its first home game of the season.
Old Dominion got on the board first with Tom Wustenberg’s first goal of the season at the 9-minute mark before Carolina tied the match at 1-1 on an ODU own goal off Brad Kurtz’s corner kick at the 22-minute mark.
But the Monarchs proved to be the final benefactors of own goals as they took a 2-1 lead off the second own goal of the match, the first one of the season against Carolina, at the 38-minute mark and never surrendered the lead.
With the result, ODU improved to 2-6-1 (1-2-1 Conference USA) while Carolina moved to 5-5 (0-3-0).
In the match, ODU had 10 shots in contrast to eight for Carolina while it had the advantage in corner kicks at 9-4.
Luca Mayr had four shots on the night, including one on goal. Frano Buhovac, Jared Gulden, Tucker Monheimer and Kyle Gurrieri each had one, as well.
