Gamecocks Kick Off Season with Carolina Challenge
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina women’s cross country team opens the 2019 season by hosting the Carolina Challenge on Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Sandhill Research and Education Center.
Hosting both a men’s and women’s 5K, the women take off at 9 a.m., with the men’s race beginning at 9:45 a.m. The awards ceremony is schedule for 10:30 a.m., honoring the top two teams and the top-10 individuals.
“We’re excited to kick off the season at home,” cross country coach Andrew Allden said. “With us only having one home meet this season it’s great to start the season with the chance to run in front of the home crowd.”
Joining South Carolina on the women’s side will be USC-Beaufort, The Citadel, Clemson, Gardner-Webb, Benedict, Presbyterian and Columbia College (SC). The men’s teams competing consist of USC-Beaufort, The Citadel, Gardner-Webb, Benedict, Presbyterian, Columbia College (SC) and South Carolina State.
Hitting the course for the Gamecocks are returners Morgan Adams, Sierra Biber, Caitlin Conway, Rachel Hensler, Kelsey Larkin, Morgan Lee, Sarah-Sims McGrath, Maryah Nasir, Sarah Riser, Heather Stone, Hannah Twine and Brooke Wilson.
Making their debuts as Gamecocks are freshmen Savannah Bowers, Elizabeth Davison, Hillary Neely and Cheyenne Young.
Fans attending the event, which is free to the public, should enter at 1020 Clemson Road at the intersection of Clemson Road and Promenade Place.
For students coming out to the meet, the scanning of cards will begin at 8 a.m., at the marking table. The first 20 students in attendance will receive a voucher to get a football jersey. In order to get the jersey, students must stay through the women’s race, go back to the marketing table, and get a logo stamped on their voucher. They then have the opportunity to go pick up a jersey on Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Davis Field located at 743 Greene Street.
