Samuel, Hoole Learn Matchups for NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships

Stillwater, Okla. – South Carolina men’s tennis senior Toby Samuel and junior Casey Hoole learned their opponents for the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships with the release of both brackets on Sunday. The events in Stillwater, Okla., will begin on Mon., May 20 at the Greenwood Tennis Center.

In the 64-player singles event, Samuel was promoted to the No. 4 seed after a higher seed withdrew from the tournament. In his first round match, Samuel will face Pablo Masjuan of UC Santa Barbara at 11:00 a.m. Masjuan is currently ranked No. 75 in the ITA Singles Rankings.

This will be Samuel’s first true appearance in the NCAA Singles Tournament. In 2023, Samuel earned a qualifying spot as a No. 9-16 seed but had to withdraw before the tournament began due to illness.

The 32-team doubles event will begin on Tues., May 21 with Samuel and Hoole facing the No. 1 seed Garret Johns and Pedro Rodenas of Duke. The time for their match is TBA.

Samuel extends South Carolina’s streak of having a seeded singles entry in the NCAA Championships to five straight tournaments. During the 2019 event, fifth-seeded Paul Jubb went on to win the title and in 2021 second-seeded Daniel Rodrigues went on to be the tournament runner-up.

As the No. 4 seed in singles, Samuel will be named an ITA All-American after the conclusion of the Championships. The senior earned the honor in both singles and doubles disciplines in 2023.
