Knoxville, Tenn. –
The South Carolina men’s tennis team lost in the first match of their road trip today against the Tennessee Volunteers in Knoxville, 6-1. The match was forced indoors due to inclement weather. Senior Guillaume Legat won his match against Tennessee’s Mark Parsons in three sets to raise his Southeastern Conference dual match record to 8-2. Legat and Parsons have both been conference Player of the Week selections for their outstanding play during the 2001 spring season.
Legat’s teammates did not fair as well. Both David Nelson and Marcus Westman forced their first sets to tiebreakers over their Tennessee opponents. Westman won the second set in a tiebreaker and finally succumbed to 66th-ranked Adam Carey in the third set, 6-1. Nelson won his second set with ease 6-2, but his opponent Paul Podbury took the third set 6-4.
In doubles the ranked teams for Tennessee defeated the Gamecocks at one and three to gain the first point of the match.
South Carolina will take on Vanderbilt on Sunday, April 15, 2001 for their last match of the regular season.
