Soccer To Close Out Exhibition Schedule Sunday At UNCW

Carolina comes in fresh off 7-1 victory over Wofford

COLUMBIA, S.C.— South Carolina men’s soccer closes out its exhibition portion of the 2019 schedule Sunday as it travels to UNC-Wilmington. The friendly kicks off at 2:00 p.m. ET with live stats found here

Carolina comes into the year looking to pair 12 newcomers, including nine freshmen, with a squad that returns its top three goal scorers from 2018.

The Gamecocks return to exhibition action this weekend after earning a resounding 7-1 win over Wofford on Wednesday night. Carolina scored seven unanswered goals in the victory at Stone Stadium. The Terriers scored five minutes into the contest, but the Gamecocks responded with two first-half goals and five in the second period as they earned their first friendly victory of 2019 in front of a sellout crowd.

23 Gamecocks recorded minutes in the contest, marking the second-straight time Carolina reached that mark.

Tucker Monheimer scored his first goal of the season in exhibition play at the 17th minute to tie the contest at 1-1. Zach Kirkwood continued the scoring less than seven minutes later to push the lead to 2-1 at halftime.

Monheimer wasn’t done, though, as he pushed across his second finish of the night just six minutes into the second period to extend the Carolina lead to 3-1 over the Terriers.

For the second-straight exhibition, freshman Brian Banahan scored twice, as well. His goals at the 70th and 77th minutes mixed with Logan Frost’s goal at the 75th minute gave the Gamecocks a 6-1 lead with 15 minutes left in the match.

Seth Wiebusch notched the final goal in the 81st minute for the Gamecocks to secure the 7-1 win over the Terriers.

Carolina and UNCW share a common exhibition foe as the Seahawks defeated No. 10 Duke by a 2-1 count on Tuesday night while Carolina earned a 2-2 tie in Durham, N.C., last week.

The regular season opens Aug. 30 at Clemson while the home opener is set for Sept. 3 against Gardner-Webb.
