Verzyl Finishes Fifth at U.S. Olympic Trials
Knoxville, Tenn. – South Carolina redshirt junior diver Sophie Verzyl finished in fifth place in the 3-meter event at the U.S. Olympic Trials on Saturday evening, just shy of the Olympic cut.
Verzyl advanced to the finals after posting a 300.45 in the prelims and a 313.55 in the semifinals on Thursday. Both scores landed her in third place in each round. Her 313.55 from Thursday’s semifinal carried over to Saturday’s final where she tallied a 587.40 across ten dives, finishing fifth.
Verzyl’s highest scoring dive of the event was her forward two and a half somersault two twist pike that garnered her 71.40 points in the semifinals.
The Columbia, S.C., native will return to South Carolina to compete with the team for the 2023-25 season after having taken this past season off to train.
