Basketball

United States 102, Japan 76
The United States women’s basketball team opened Group C play with a 102-76 win over Japan Monday night (July 29) in Paris. A’ja Wilson had a team-high 24 points and made it a double-double with 13 rebounds. Wilson was 10-of-16 from the field and had four assists and four blocked shots in the win. The American team will face Belgium in Group C play on Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m. Eastern time.

France 75, Canada 54
Canada women’s basketball opened Olympic play with a 75-54 loss to host France on Monday afternoon (July 29). Laeticia Amihere played 2:19 in the first quarter. The Canadian team will face Australia on Thursday morning at 7:30 a.m. Eastern time to continue Group B play.

Tennis

Francisco Cerundolo (ARG) d. No. 10 Ugo Humbert (FRA), 7-5, 6-7 (5), 7-5
Francisco Cerundolo opened Monday (July 29) with a 7-5, 6-7 (5), 7-5 win over No. 10 seed Ugo Humbert in the second round of men’s singles play at Roland Garros.  He earned breaks to at the end of both the first and third sets to earn the upset. He now will face No. 6 seed Casper Ruud of Norway in the third round. Cerundolo pulled out of doubles play, which was scheduled to start on Monday.

Sunday, July 28

Soccer

Canada 2, France 1
Canada women’s soccer scored in stoppage time to defeat host France, 2-1, on Sunday night (July 28) in Group A play at the Olympics. Canada scored a goal in the 58th minute to tie the match, then scored 12 minutes into stoppage time to keep alive its hopes to advance to the quarterfinals. Sabrina D’Angelo did not play in the match. The Canadian team will wrap up Group A play on Wednesday, July 31 at 3 p.m. Eastern time, facing Colombia.

Tennis

Francisco Cerundolo (ARG) d. Marcelo Tomas Barrios Vera (CHI), 6-2, 6-1
A day after winning an ATP Tour 250 event in Croatia, Francisco Cerundolo opened Olympic competition with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Marcelo Tomas Barrios Vera of Chile in the first round of singles play. Cerundolo will face Ugo Humbert of France, the No. 10 overall seed, in the second round. Cerundolo also will team up with fellow Argentine Tomas Martin Etcheverry to face Robin Haase and Jean-Julien Rojer of the Netherlands in the first round of doubles play on Monday.

Canada 2, New Zealand 1
Canada women’s soccer opened Olympic play on Thursday (July 25) with a 2-1 win against New Zealand. Sabrina D’Angelo did not play in the contest. The Canadian team will next play host France on Sunday, July 28 at 3 p.m. Eastern time.
