Sept. 20, 2003

Columbia, S.C. – The University of South Carolina finished sixth as a team and Jenny Lake took sixth place at the Bulldog Stampede held Saturday, Sept. 20, in Athens, Ga. Lake, a junior from Geneseo, Ill., ran the entire race with the lead pack of runners and finished with a time of 18:37.

“We ran well, not great,” commented Head Coach Stan Rosenthal. “It was a really difficult course with lots of hills, times were slow because of that.”

The Stampede was held at the University of Georgia Golf Course. USC compiled a team score of 153, two points behind fifth place Central Florida. Vanderbilt claimed top team honors with a score of 55.

Freshman Karen Wigal got off to a slow start but showed a finishing push as she spent the last mile of the race passing several runners on her way to a 26th place finish. Also in the lineup for USC was senior Mary Wright and four freshmen Nicki Breves, Ashley Cruse, Christine Mudd and Tristian Rackow. USC will travel to Cary, N.C. this Friday, Sept. 26, to compete at the Great American Cross Country Festival. The Friday evening meet is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
