Gamecocks Open Cross Country Campaign in Boone

BOONE, N.C. (Aug. 29, 2024) – South Carolina Cross Country will open its season tomorrow morning in Boone, N.C. as the Gamecocks participate in the Covered Bridge Open. Distance coach Brock Moreaux will look to build on the team’s momentum from last season in which South Carolina posted the best finish in the SEC Championship since 2001.

PARTICIPATING TEAMS
There will be a total of eight teams running at the Covered Bridge Open tomorrow, including Palmetto State opponent USC Upstate. Appalachian State will play host to the event with the women running a 5K.

GAMECOCK RUNNERS
The Gamecocks will be sending 22 runners to Boone tomorrow, including 11 student-athletes who will be making their debuts for South Carolina. Of the 11 returners, Ella Zeigler has the fastest 5K time in the record book with a time of 17:22.8, ranking sixth all-time in program history. She will be joined by Anna Boyd who ranks seventh (17:23.4), Hattie Jennings in eighth (17:28.0) and Lily Weeks slated in ninth (17:30.8).

Teresa Cherotich will be making her cross country debut, fresh off an outdoor track & field season that saw her finish 18th in the outdoor steeplechase at the NCAA Championship in Eugene, Ore. Sylvia Chelangat looks to build off her outdoor season in which she earned her first ever First Team All-American honor, running as the second leg in the women’s 4×400 meter relay that finished sixth at the National Championship.

There will be eight true freshman running for Coach Moreaux this week, including local talent Abigail White (Chapin High School) and Lexington, Ky. native Cate Conklin.
